Wise County Health Wagon M7 Expedition Follow Up

Wise, VA – The Health Wagon's 26th Annual Move Mountains Medical Mission (M7) Health Expedition delivered more than $500,000 in free medical, dental, vision, specialty, and veterinary services to underserved communities throughout Southwest Virginia on July 10–11, 2026. In just 48 hours, healthcare professionals, students, volunteers, and community partners joined forces to provide lifesaving care to individuals and families who often face significant barriers to accessing essential healthcare services. Rural Appalachian communities continue to experience some of the nation's greatest healthcare disparities, including poverty rates approaching 20%, severe shortages of primary and specialty care providers, and travel distances averaging 20 miles or more to reach medical services. For many residents, the cost of healthcare, transportation challenges, and limited provider availability make preventive care and necessary treatments difficult or impossible to obtain. The M7 Health Expedition helps eliminate these barriers by bringing comprehensive, compassionate healthcare directly into the communities that need it most. During the two-day event, healthcare teams recorded 909 medical visits involving 517 unique patients and provided 421 dental services, contributing to a total of 1,601 medical, dental, and specialty services, including vision care. These services represented approximately $426,533 in donated healthcare. For some patients, the expedition provided their first medical visit in years, while others received specialty services they had never previously been able to access. Recognizing that pets are important members of Appalachian families, the expedition also included extensive veterinary services. Veterinary professionals cared for 909 pets, providing examinations, treatments, preventive services, and other essential care valued at $77,087. Combined, the medical and veterinary services represented more than half a million dollars in donated care over just two days. “These numbers represent far more than the dollar value of care. They represent families receiving healthcare they might otherwise have gone without, individuals gaining access to dental and vision services, and beloved pets receiving needed veterinary care,” said Dr. Teresa Tyson DNP, President and CEO of the Health Wagon. She emphasized the extraordinary impact made possible through collaboration among healthcare professionals, students, volunteers, and community organizations. Dr. Paula Hill-Collins DNP, Vice President and Clinical Director, highlighted the expedition's commitment to addressing medical needs and social determinants of health. By caring for individuals and their pets, the event supported the overall well-being of families while providing hope, dignity, and access to much-needed services. Since 1980, the Health Wagon has remained dedicated to improving healthcare access through free and low-cost medical, dental, and vision services throughout Southwest Virginia. The next Wise County M7 Health Expedition is scheduled for July 16–17, 2027, at the Health Wagon in Wise, Virginia.
