Dumfries-Area Apartment Hit by Gunfire

Prince William County police investigate scene of gunshots, but no suspects found.

Someone with a gun fired at least one shot into an apartment building near Dumfries Thursday night, but no injuries were reported and the shooter left the scene before police arrived.

At 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Prince William County police officers responded to the area of Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) and Yost Lane north of the town of Dumfries after someone reported hearing what sounded like seven gunshots, according to a police report.

As officers searched the area, the resident of a nearby apartment, in the 17100 block of Shell Cast Loop, discovered what appeared to be evidence of a gunshot in their living unit, police said. The resident told police that a bullet hole was found in the wall inside the apartment that faces the nearby woods, and a second hole was found across the room.

An investigation revealed that a single bullet had penetrated the outer wall of the apartment and the interior wall on the other side of the room.

The bullet did not appear to fully penetrate the interior wall into a hallway, police said. No other property damage was reported.
