The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and remained at the scene of the crash. Speed, alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash for the driver, police said. This is the third fatal crash of the year in Prince William County.
The investigation revealed that Mares was in a designated crosswalk at the time of the crash; however, the crosswalk signal was not activated, the police said. When Mares entered the roadway to cross Route 1, the traffic light changed from red to green.
