WOODBRIDGE, VA — David Maine, the man accused of killing four people in Woodbridge last week, previously served in the United States Marine Corps. Court records obtained by Patch also noted that Maine accidentally shot himself in the leg in a supermarket parking lot in 2021.

Maine was originally charged with reckless handling of a firearm after he shot himself, but prosecutors dropped the charge in April.

Maine is currently charged with four counts of second-degree murder after four people were found dead at his home in Woodbridge last week. He is being held without bond, and his next court date is set for Dec. 13, 2022.

Through a Freedom of Information Act request, the Prince William County Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney provided Patch with details about the 2021 shooting involving Maine.

On Nov. 28, 2021, a Prince William County police officer was called to the Giant supermarket in Dale City's Mapledale Plaza for a shooting. When he arrived, the officer saw a Giant employee applying a tourniquet to Maine's leg in a car, according to the police report.

Maine told the officer he accidentally shot himself. The handgun was in the front passenger seat while Maine received medical attention in the driver's seat, the police officer said.

The officer noted that one bullet had been fired from the handgun and it was loaded with 14 rounds in the magazine.

Maine told the officer he was carrying the gun in his waistband without a holster. Before walking into the Giant, he decided to take the gun out of his waistband and place it in the glovebox, according to the officer's report.

The gun fired as Maine tried to pull it out of his waistband, authorities said. He suffered a single gunshot wound to his thigh. Due to the location of the gunshot wound, medical personnel used a helicopter to take Maine to a hospital.

The officer chose to charge Maine with one count of reckless handling of a firearm. After several initial court dates, the office of the commonwealth's attorney decided not to continue pursuing the charges. Authorities did not say what factors caused the charges to be dropped.

Six months after his reckless handling of a firearm charge was dropped, Maine was arrested in connection with an Oct. 17 quadruple homicide at his home in Woodbridge.

Police officials said Maine called 911 after killing four people who lived with him including a pair of newlyweds, their daughter, and another tenant. He originally told authorities that someone had fired gunshots into their house, but police officers did not find any bullet holes.
