According to the Associated Press, about 46,000 students attend classes in Seattle, with an additional 11,000 students between UW campuses in Tacoma and Bothell.

"These actions are being taken in response to recommendations from public health agencies to avoid bringing large groups of people together in close proximity for events and gatherings," said Mark Richards, Provost. "In-person classes qualify as events, and the sizes of our classrooms do not generally allow for social distancing."

University officials said finals will not be conducted in person but may be completed online "when feasible."

"Departments and the instructors of record should determine the most appropriate solutions for finishing courses and determining grades," the university said in a news release. "Departments and faculty are asked to put student health and success first in all decision making."

UW directed teachers to consider whether their final grades could fairly be determined based upon previously completed work.

The University of Washington announced Friday a staff member who works in the Roosevelt Commons East received a presumptive positive test result for COBID-19 and was in self-isolation at home. The building where the employee worked has been closed until further notice for cleaning.

University officials said the staff member last visited the building on Feb. 28 and the school was working to track down anyone the person may have come in contact with.

According to a news release, UW is planning to resume classes when the spring quarter begins March 30, depending on guidance from public health officials.

The university said its Seattle campus would remain open, along with its other services, including hospitals, clinics, dining halls, residence halls, and recreational facilities. Husky athletics events will continue as scheduled.
