Where's the Beef? Seattle Startup Crowd Cow Delivers It To Your Door

The Seattle startup Crowd Cow has secured $2 million in seed funding to deliver local beef to meat lovers.

SEATTLE, WA - If you've ever felt underwhelmed buying a puny slice of top round steak from the refrigerator case at your local chain supermarket, there's a beef-focused startup in town that you might want to check out.

The Seattle startup Crowd Cow secured $2 million in seed funding this week to expand its unique crowd-based beef service. Using Crowd Cow, beef lovers can buy a share of a whole cow, and then have select parts shipped to them - you get the cuts you want, and you get to buy the beef directly from a Washington rancher.

"'This beef tastes amazing, but buying high-quality beef should be fun and convenient too," said co-founder Joe Heitzeberg in a press release. "That’s why we encourage everyone to rally their friends to help tip a cow. It’s also why we make sure each and every cut of beef is dry-aged, flash-frozen, and vacuum sealed. Premium beef delivered direct to your home needs to be delicious, tender, and easy to store.”

Crowd Cow was founded by local tech veterans Ethan Lowry and Heitzeberg. Lowry was the co-founder of Yelp competitor Urbanspoon, and Heitzeberg founded Snapvine. Their new investors include former NFL quarterback Joe Montana, and Maveron Capital, Zulily founders Mark Vadon and Darrell Cavens' venture capital firm.

Crowd Cow sources its beef from ranchers in Spanaway, Curtis, Coupeville, and on Lopez Island. The service is available in Puget Sound cities from Edmonds to University Place. With the $2 million, Crowd Cow plans to expand relationships with ranchers, and add employees at its Seattle headquarters.
