Peregrine Falcon Chicks: We Energies Reveals Naming Contest Results

We Energies revealed the top 10 names on Thursday from thousands of votes for the newly hatched peregrine falcons across Wisconsin.

OAK CREEK, WI — Names such as "Barney" and "Favre" were among the top ten names chosen in We Energies' naming contest for the peregrine falcon chicks that recently hatched at power plants in Oak Creek and beyond.

So far, nine chicks have hatched, and more are expected to come, according to a news release from the company on Thursday. The falcons will formally receive their names, plus identification bands, in the coming weeks, We Energies said.

Four chicks have hatched at the power plant in Oak Creek, with others hatching or soon expected at the Valley Power Plant in Milwaukee, the Port Washington Generating Station and the Weston Power Plant in Rothschild.

The 2022 naming contest was in honor of the 30th anniversary of We Energie's peregrine falcon program, so the options were inspired by pop culture, sports and music from 1992. More than 7000 votes were cast, according to We Energies.

The choices were varied, but here were the top ten that We Energies announced on Thursday:

  • Jump: honoring the 1992 debut of "Jump Around" by House of Pain.
  • Mae: In honor of Mae Jemison, the first Black woman who went to space.
  • Golden: In honor of the television series "The Golden Girls."
  • Mario: Because "Super Mario Cart" debuted in 1992.
  • Scrunchie: In honor of the hairband from the '90s.
  • Whitney: In honor of "I Will Always Love You," 1992's top-selling song.
  • Favre: In honor of Brett Favre starting with the Packers.
  • Dream: In honor of a 1992 gold medal dream team.
  • Garth: From Wayne's World, which came out in 1992.
  • Barney: The purple dinosaur made his debut in 1992.
