Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- A Tuesday night shooting inside a Birmingham apartment took the life of one woman and left two young girls injured. When North Precinct officers responded to the scene, they found 24-year-old Corieonna Shantrice Hines as well as a 7-year-old and a 13-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds. Hines was pronounced dead on the scene; the children were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators have identified a male suspect but have not made any arrests as of Wednesday. The incident is currently believed to be domestic in nature. (AL.com)
- The City of Birmingham achieved a budget surplus of $81 million for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Mayor Randall Woodfin attributes much of this financial success to a spike in retail, restaurant, and sporting/entertainment sales. Over $60 million of the windfall has been allocated, with funds set aside for cost-of-living increases for employees, hiring new employees for Birmingham Fire and Rescue, and making improvements across city departments. (AL.com)
- If you've ever thought about renting out your home, you might be in one of the best locations for it. Birmingham was ranked the fourth-best city to open an Airbnb in, according to a recent analysis from Incfile. The Magic City received high marks for its relatively low cost of living compared to other major U.S. cities, making a rental home investment more accessible.
