5 Things To Do In Birmingham This Weekend That Are Not Football

For those of you who want something to do in Birmingham other than watching football, here are five suggestions.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - While Friday nights in the fall are usually spent by families watching high school football, and Saturdays are reserved for college football, and Sundays are for NFL - hey, Alabamians love their football - for those in Birmingham looking for something to do that is not football related actually to have options this weekend.

Of course, visiting one of the many year-long attractions like the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Negro Southern League Museum, Vulcan, Railroad Park or the Birmingham Zoo is always an option. But here are five suggestions for the coming weekend that do not involve a football:

Birmingham ArtWalk: Birmingham Artwalk, presented by Urban Standard and friends, is set for September 7 and 8 in Birmingham’s Loft District. The 17th annual arts festival showcases local and regional art as part of a juried art show. Friday night (September 7) is similar to a giant gallery opening, with all the energy and excitement of a street festival. Saturday afternoon (September 8) caters more to families with special children’s activities in the Kid’s Zone on Morris Avenue. In addition, both days always offer an enticing glimpse to attendees of the economic, residential and cultural revitalization underway downtown throughout the years.

Alabama Wildlife Center Baby Bird Season: The Alabama Wildlife Center in Pelham presents a unique learning experience on Alabama’s injured and orphaned native birds in order to permit their return to the wild, and to provide conservation education to people of all ages in order to heighten awareness and appreciation of Alabama’s precious wildlife resources, and how we can responsibly preserve and protect them. Scheduled for September 7, 9 and 10 at 9:00 a.m., admission is free after paid admission to Oak Mountain State Park.

Birmingham Ghost Walk: September 7-9, take a tour of Birmingham with a paranormal slant. This tour covers the earliest history of the city, two of our haunted hotels and three of our founding churches, along with the saga of one of the most infamous murders and riots in early Birmingham...along with all the dark and unusual history. Ruby Tuesday, a play at Theatre Downtown: Nate is approaching his 30th birthday, and life is nothing like he'd hoped it would be. After getting his girlfriend pregnant in high school, he's been left to raise his daughter by himself. He's also stuck working for his dad in the family mechanic business -- which he's great at, but he secretly hopes to do something more. When he finally gets the opportunity to turn his life around, his daughter makes an announcement that will throw the entire family for a loop, and put a kink in Nate's plans for a new start. It's a heartwarming world-premiere comedy from Birmingham's own Daniel Martin, author of Sincerely Sugar Bear, Miss Fancy, Feed Me, and Baker's Dozen.

2018 BBQ At The Brew: Love barbecue, brews, or Holy Family Cristo Rey? Make sure you plan to attend the 2018 BBQ at the Brew on Saturday, September 8, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Cahaba Brewing Company. This amateur barbecue cook-off, sponsored by Ram Tool Construction Supply Co., will be fun for the whole family. Enjoy free samples, specialty brews, food trucks, live music by Diner and plenty of kid-friendly activities.
