Birmingham Police Department Releases June Accountability Report

The police department's report includes disciplinary actions, policies, community engagement, accolades and how to file a complaint.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department has released its first accountability report, part of an initiative launched by Mayor Randall Woodfin and Chief Patrick Smith.

Smith and Woodfin developed an accountability booklet with detailed information regarding disciplinary actions, policies, community engagement, accolades, how to file a complaint and a special message from Smith.

The report shows 77 instances of disciplinary action taken against police officers in the department between June 2018 and May 2020, resulting in the termination of 16 officers and the resignation of seven.

The city issued a survey last week, and Woodfin said over the next 30 days, the city will conduct an internal review of the police department, consistent with the "8 Can't Wait" format.

"At the end of that 30 day period I will issue an executive order executing any gaps we find between what we do," Woodfin said. "We will determine a community safety task force that will do a 90-day deeper drive into all the Birmingham Police Department's rules and procedures."
