GOP Sweeps Elections; Sessions Resigns: Week In News

This past week was dominated by election news, as the GOP swept Alabama's elections.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - An election week is always full of headlines, and this past week was no exception. Republicans running for office in Alabama basically won wherever they could, in a virtual sweep of the 2018 mid-term elections.

Also in the news this week was U.S. Attorney General and former Alabama lawmaker Jeff Sessions issuing his resignation, a Vestavia Hills police officer who was arrested on felony charges and a man without pants falling through a ceiling in a north Alabama Waffle House.

Alabama Voters Exceed Expectations At Polls

Although expectations were low for turnout by Alabama voters last week, most counties exceeded the predictions by Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill. Merrill said that turnout for the general election would likely be in the 35 percent to 40 percent range, roughly what it was four years ago when voter participation hit a 28-year low.

Vestavia Police Officer Arrested On Felony Charges

A Vestavia Hills police officer has been arrested under felony warrants, the department said Friday. Detectives with the Vestavia Hills Police Department obtained warrants through the Jefferson County District Attorney's office on VHPD officer Timothy Burns.

Diners at a Waffle House restaurant in North Alabama Sunday experienced something they have likely never seen while eating out. A man crashed through the ceiling and into the dining room - wearing no pants.

Alabama Fan Dies from Injuries Sustained In Fight After LSU Game

A man who has been described by family as an avid Alabama football fan has died after sustaining injuries from a bar fight after the Alabama-LSU football game Saturday night. Robert Bowers, 46, died Tuesday of injuries he suffered being beaten and knocked unconscious early Sunday morning by two men in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
