Legacy Arena Renovations: Proposed Design Approved

Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex will undergo major renovations this year.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex received unanimous approval Wednesday from the Birmingham Design Review Committee on the proposed designs and construction materials to be utilized on the building exterior for the upcoming Legacy Arena renovation.

The designs will be presented to the BJCC board of directors for approval next Wednesday, December 18th at their regularly scheduled public board meeting.

The presentation to the DRC consisted of plans and drawings showing designs for the arena’s exterior, as well as construction materials, hardscape, exterior lighting and landscaping.

The 18- month Legacy Arena renovation is scheduled to begin in Spring 2020 after the Bassmasters Classic event is held at the arena. in March

Populous, the architectural firm serving as lead architect on the Legacy Arena renovation is also the architect on the Protective Stadium project, now underway on the east side of the BJCC campus.

After today’s approval of exterior designs and materials, the DRC’s next involvement with the project will be its review of the signage package, encompassing signage visible from the building’s exterior. That review will take place in 2020.

Today’s DRC approval allows the BJCC to begin preparation of a comprehensive construction
package. The package will be put forward for competitive public bid early next year, in compliance with public bid law.
