The week of January 21-27 included a prisoner escaping from a St. Clair County prison, and an award reaffirmed for Angela Davis.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The week of January 21-27 included some diverse headlines in local news. From police activity to an award that had been rescinded then reaffirmed by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

Other headlines included Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies getting a raise and two first-grade students at a local school being disciplined for having a butter knife on school grounds.

Teen Charged After Shooting Threat At Thompson High School

A threat of violence Jan. 10 that caused a lockdown at Thompson High School has resulted in a North Alabama teenager being charged with a Class C felony. Although the threat never manifested itself, an investigation followed, which led law enforcement to the Madison County teen.

Prisoner Escapes From St. Clair Correctional Facility

A prisoner at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville has escaped, according to a report Thursday morning. Corey Davis, 30, reportedly escaped from the facility Wednesday night.

County Commission Approves Raise For Jefferson County Deputies

New Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway said when he was running for office he wanted to see deputies paid more, and now it looks like he will get his wish. Pettway met with the commission this week to gain final approval for a 5 percent cost of living raise for Jefferson County deputies.

Civil Rights Institute Reverses Course, Honors Angela Davis

Davis was slated to accept an award from the Birmingham Civil Rights institute, but that award was rescinded after local groups criticized her anti-Israel political stance. Now, that award will be given to Davis, anyway, if she accepts it.
