Vote For Birmingham: Alabama Theatre Among 25 Finalists In National Geographic Contest
Birmingham's Alabama Theatre could have a newly-restored marquee sign if enough people rally around the cause.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The historic Alabama Theatre in Birmingham could have a newly-restored marquee sign, if its inclusion in a current contest results in a win for the landmark. The theater is one of 25 finalists in a nationwide contest, hosted by National Geographic, where it could win grants up to $150,000.
National Geographic, American Express and National Trust for Historic Preservation have teamed up with National Main Street Center on a grassroots campaign recognizing 25 historic sites on American main streets, including Birmingham. During the campaign that runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 31, people can vote for their favorite main street project up to five times a day at www.VoteYourMainStreet.org. During this campaign, the public is invited and encouraged to vote once a day for up to five Main Street projects at VoteYourMainStreet.Org. They are also invited to support their favorite Main Streets by attending special events during Open House Weekend, which is scheduled for October 6-9 and is being sponsored by Delta Airlines. The Main Streets with the most votes at the end of the voting period will be awarded grants, until the full $2 million is distributed.
