HPD's Traffic Services Unit shares five practical tips for new drivers, from buckling up and putting phones away to slowing down, planning routes, and watching for changing traffic patterns to keep Huntsville's roads and school communities safe.

Fun for fall: Parks & Recreation's 2026 Fall Program Guide is here (huntsvilleal.gov) — Huntsville residents can now browse the 2026 Fall Program Guide from Parks & Recreation, featuring more than 150 free activities and events across city parks and centers. From fitness classes and arts programs to October's family-friendly Halloween happenings, the guide highlights ways to stay active, explore different neighborhoods, and enjoy cooler weather as fall approaches.
   

3. Huntsville Animal Services seeks community support after large intake of animals (huntsvilleal.gov) — Huntsville Animal Services urgently needs help after taking in 24 pets from a single Huntsville home, pushing the shelter to Crisis Level 4 capacity. Staff are asking residents to adopt, foster, or even host short "sleepovers" to free up kennels so newly arrived animals can receive safe housing, medical care, and a chance to recover.
   

4. Auburn's new $30 million high-tech research facility opens in Huntsville: 'Absolutely amazing' (al.com) — Auburn University has opened a $30 million Applied Research Institute Laboratory in Huntsville's Cummings Research Park, adding cutting-edge space electronics testing and advanced manufacturing capacity just minutes from Redstone Arsenal. The 50,000‑square‑foot facility, built in 11 months, will support local aerospace and defense industries, host more than 30 research scientists, and give Auburn students hands‑on experience alongside key federal partners.
   

5. Former Howard football player lands TV job after 223 applications (newsobserver.com) — A new face is coming to Huntsville's airwaves as former Howard University linebacker and journalist Brock Morgan joins FOX54 as an anchor and reporter. After 223 job applications and graduate work at Northwestern, he's bringing HBCU and big‑event reporting experience to cover Rocket City sports, Alabama A&M, and local news for Huntsville viewers.
