Here's the latest on Huntsville's $12.5 million expansion of Big Spring Park (al.com) — Huntsville's $12.5 million expansion of Big Spring Park East is moving into a more visible phase, with the new pavilion structure and raised Church Street crosswalk now taking shape. When finished in spring 2027, the project will add tiered plazas, accessible routes between Church Street and Fountain Circle, new playgrounds, public art and upgraded landscaping to downtown's signature park.
   

2. Registration Now Open for Carbon Fiber 2026 (compositesworld.com) — A major carbon fiber industry conference is coming back to Huntsville Nov. 10–12, with sessions and networking focused on aerospace, space, and defense applications. Attendees will gather at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and nearby venues to explore new materials, manufacturing advances, and supply-chain challenges. Local professionals in aerospace and composites can register now to connect with global experts.
   

3. More Than $7.1 Million in Rural Healthcare Grants to Support District 10 (weisradio.com) — New rural healthcare grants totaling over $7.1 million will help expand services across District 10, and a Huntsville Hospital award will create the North Alabama Rural Specialty Access Network. That network will link DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall counties to more specialty care. Funded through a large federal rural health program, the effort aims to bring advanced services closer to smaller communities.
   

4. Huntsville + Decatur metros report lowest unemployment rates in July (hvilleblast.com) — Huntsville's metro area is tied with Decatur for the lowest unemployment rate in Alabama at 3.1% for July, even as the state's overall jobless rate ticked up slightly. The report shows every Alabama metro, including Huntsville, improved over June, though most remain above last year's levels, offering residents a snapshot of a still-strong local job market.
   

5. Red Lobster to close Montgomery location (wsfa.com) — Huntsville's Red Lobster is staying open even as the chain shuts its longtime Montgomery restaurant on Sept. 6. The company says the closure is a business decision, leaving six Alabama locations, including Huntsville, Birmingham, Florence, Oxford, Dothan and Gadsden.
