1. Huntsville Fire & Rescue opens application window for firefighters (huntsvilleal.gov) — Huntsville Fire & Rescue is now accepting firefighter applications for 2026, with the window open through Oct. 22 and required CPAT orientations in early November. Applicants can also attend October open houses and study sessions at Station 1 and the Public Safety Training Academy to learn about the job, meet leadership, and prepare for the written exam.
   

2. TVA raises rates for data centers, adding upfront fee for new and existing facilities (waff.com) — Huntsville officials have approved a TVA rate change that raises power costs and adds an upfront fee for all new and existing data centers, while keeping residential rates unchanged. The move, discussed with Huntsville Utilities and city council, could affect current and future data-center projects, including Meta's facility, which will be addressed publicly in December.
   

3. Huntsville Parks & Recreation spooking up frightfully fun Halloween lineup (huntsvilleal.gov) — Huntsville Parks & Recreation is rolling out a free lineup of October Halloween events, including the fifth annual Halloween Party & Haunted House at the Jaycee Building in John Hunt Park. Families across the city are invited to enjoy safe, costume-friendly festivities in partnership with Huntsville Police, with more details available on the department's Facebook page.
   

4. U.S. News released its 2027 Best Colleges list — where do our local universities rank? (hvilleblast.com) — UAH has been named the fifth-best university in Alabama by U.S. News, making it the only Huntsville-area college to crack the state's top five. The story also highlights how UAH and UNA stack up in regional rankings, giving local families fresh context as they weigh college options close to home.
