1. Troy's historic Academy Street School to welcome students for the first time since 1970 (wsfa.com) — A long-closed historic school building in Troy is reopening this month as the Academy Street Career Innovation Center, offering free, hands-on career training to local high schoolers. Students from Troy City and Pike County schools can split their day here, earning college credits and job-ready certificates while honoring the site’s legacy as a former Black high school. Classes begin August 19.
   

2. Ella Mae Stevenson Shannon (pressregister.com) — Family and friends in Troy are preparing to honor Ella Mae Stevenson Shannon, who spent her later years at Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center and passed away July 29. Her funeral and burial will be held at Green Hills Funeral Home and Green Hills Memorial Cemetery in Troy on August 12, with a large extended family and community remembering her service and faith.
   

3. Pike County First In Flight grad becomes certified flight in... (troymessenger.com) — A Pike County High School graduate has become the first First In Flight program alum to qualify as a certified flight instructor, after starting aviation training in high school. Through Pike County Schools’ partnership with Troy University, he earned both flight credentials and college credit, and now hopes to help other local students discover aviation careers.
   

4. Congress takes aim at transfer portal with new college sports bill (wtvy.com) — A proposed federal bill on college sports could directly affect Troy University football, which recently lost key players to the transfer portal. The Protect College Sports Act would restrict multiple transfers, cap revenue sharing, and expand long-term scholarships and medical coverage, changes that local commentators say Troy fans will feel on the field.
