The certification comes after two years of training for the seasoned investigator and TPD said the expertise gained from it will enhance the department’s ability to analyze ballistic evidence, solve complex cases, and promote a safe community.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Brent Blankley said it will also strengthen the department's ability to swiftly and effectively investigate cases involving firearms. As a result, he said he hopes this will lead to more efficient case resolutions and success in apprehending suspects.

“The work they do produces strong, scientific evidence that holds up in court, ensuring justice for violent crime victims and their families," Blankley said.

Blankley explained that evidence collected in gun crimes in the past was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for analysis — presenting a time-consuming process slowed by frequent backlogs.

“The ability to conduct these investigations in-house enables us to swiftly address and
apprehend dangerous offenders,” Blankley said.

Still, Coffee is just one of four analysts in the TPD's new division, along with three evidence technicians and support staff employees.

Ceated in 2021, TPD's Forensic Science Team is led by director Mitch Rector, who is the unit’s first certified firearm examiner.

Rector brings over 30 years of experience from the Birmingham Police Department and the
Alabama Department of Forensic Science.
