Alameda Door-To-Door Utility Scam Warning

One tip from police — use a peephole, window or camera to check out the person on your doorstep before opening the door.

ALAMEDA, CA — The Alameda Police Department is warning residents about scammers going door-to-door posing as service technicians, claiming to be from electric companies, cable providers, city departments, and more. According to police, "These solicitors may be attempting scams or engaging in activities that could lead to more serious offenses."

The police department offers these tips for dealing with someone who comes to your door:

  • Before opening the door, utilize peepholes, windows, or doorbell cameras to assess the situation. This allows you to see who it is without compromising your safety.
  • Request identification from anyone claiming to be a service provider, salesperson, or charity worker. Legitimate professionals will have official credentials.
  • Independently verify the identity of the individual. Contact their respective organization using official contact information. Do not use any phone number provided by the individual in question.
  • If something feels off or raises suspicions, trust your instincts. It is okay to decline opening the door or to ask the person to leave while you verify their identity.
  • Spread the word within your community to inform neighbors of the potential impersonator.

If you encounter someone suspicious or believe you’ve been targeted by impersonators, contact the Alameda Police Department at 510-337-8340.

If you feel threatened, call 911.
