Total Woman Q & A

A peek inside Total Woman Gym + Spa

TW Q&A

Since the preview center for the new Total Woman Gym + Spa in Alameda opened in September, there have been lots of questions about who we are and our
philosophy on women’s wellness. Now that we’re in the permanent location, lots
of folks want to know how we’re doing and what the future holds.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q:        How did Total Woman Gym + Spa get started?

A:         It was started by a husband and wife team who owned several beauty shops in Southern California. They listened to their female clients complain that their husbands had gyms and spas to relax and escape, but there was nothing for women. So in 1965, the first gym and spa was opened in Westlake Village, CA, which eventually became Total Woman Gym + Spa.

Q:        Almost every business has a mission statement. What is yours?

A:         It’s a statement we made from the heart and repeat daily as a pledge to our members: “At total woman, we empower women so they can live their best lives!” We empower our members by offering a space designed for women, from our cardio and weight-training equipment and group class schedule, to our Kid’s Club and elegant spa-like locker room with steam and dry sauna and five-star day spa. Every part of Total Woman is designed to give women a place to feel comfortable as they work towards their health and wellness goals.

Q:        What kind of classes do you offer and at what times?

A:         Our class schedule was created from almost 1,200 surveys: Zumba, different types of yoga, Body Blast, Cycle, and several core-training classes, to name a few. Right now we have 65 classes per week starting as early as 6am and as late as 7:30pm. We continue to expand our schedule to offer more fun, calorie-burning, muscle-building, mind-body classes for every want and need. You can see the schedule at www.totalwomanspa.com.

Q:        Should I work with a personal trainer?

A:         Most of our members work with a personal trainer at some point.  At Total Woman, we have the most educated and experienced team of trainers of any gym in Alameda.  Personal trainers teach you to safely and effectively work beyond your limitations and reach your fitness goals.  Membership includes a complementary fitness evaluation and a basic equipment orientation.

Q:        I’ve heard you have babysitting. What should I know about it?

A:         We offer a seven-day-per-week Kid’s Club for little ones 2 months to 12 years old. Our babysitters are trained and certified in infant and child CPR and First Aid and must go through a stringent background check before being hired. Since the state of California requires a ratio of 1:6 babysitters to children, you can call up to one week in advance to reserve a spot so we can assure peace of mind as you work out and/or enjoy the spa.

Q:        Will you be opening any more TW in Northern California?

A:         We currently have 13 locations in Southern California and with the Northern California expansion, we've opened a preview center in San Jose and another opening within the next year. We are also looking at locations in Sunnyvale and Pleasanton as well as moving to the Pacific Northwest to Portland, OR, and near Seattle, WA.

The Alameda location is opened Monday through Friday 5am to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 6am to 8pm. If you would like to tour the facility, stop by between 9am and 7pm any day of the week. We’d love to help you live your best life!
