Resident Douses Blaze As Firefighters Arrive

An apartment dweller extinguished a kitchen fire as firefighters arrived Saturday evening, according to an Alameda Fire Department spokesperson.

AFD Capt. James Colburn said 18 firefighters responded to a reported kitchen fire at 6:09 p.m. in the 2000 block of Otis Drive.

Firefighters checked for any hidden fire, ensuring that it was completely extinguished, he said. 

There were no injuries to firefighters or the occupant, Colburn said.

Fire damage was limited to the kitchen and is estimated at $5,000.
