Wife Of Attorney General Bonta Admits To Past Abortion

OAKLAND, CA — Mia Bonta, a District 18 Assemblymember and the wife of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, told a pro-choice rally that she had an abortion when she was 21.

"I chose to own my body," Bonta said at a Tuesday rally at the state Capitol attended by her husband and other leaders. "I chose to make a decision that would allow me to recognize the ending cycle of poverty in my family ... to think that those choices and those decisions will not be available for women, in this country, is unfathomable."

Bonta, D-Oakland, said she was just exiting college and had just gotten her first job when she learned she was pregnant. Her future husband, Attorney General Rob Bonta, said that he held her hand when she made her choice.

Bonta has authored a bill that would ensure that subpoenas given to a patient who received reproductive healthcare in California are not granted. AB 2091 contains an urgency clause to ensure that it will go into effect immediately if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Attorney General Rob Bonta said at the rally that he will use “the full force of the law and the full authority of my office to protect a woman’s right to choose.”

A final decision is not expected from the Supreme Court until the end of June. In the meantime, Gov. Gavin Newsom has said that he wants California to be a “refuge” for those seeking abortion. In December, a report from the California Future of Abortion Council released a list of recommendations for what to do if Roe is overturned, including covering the cost of the procedure as well as transportation, child care, lodging, lost wages, and more.
