Dublin Boy Who Survives Being Hit, Pinned Under Car Scores New Bike, Helmet

Police officers and a local business owner worked together to get the 12-year-old boy back on the road.

DUBLIN, CA: A 12-year-old Dublin middle schooler who was hit by a car while biking to school in February has a new bicycle and helmet thanks to the kind hearts of several police officers and a local business owner.

The boy, 12, was biking to school on Feb. 17 when he when struck by a vehicle on Village Parkway. The boy and his bicycle were trapped underneath the vehicle, fire officials said. Witnesses reported seeing a police officer on the ground with the boy during the rescue process. Firefighters used a hydraulic airbag system and the Jaws of Life to lift the car and rescue the boy. He was airlifted to Children's Hospital Oakland.

Following the dramatic rescue, police officers rallied to replace the boy's damaged bicycle.

"Dublin Police reached out to the Dublin Cyclery to see if they would be willing to donate a bicycle to the boy," Dublin Police Services Lieutenant Nate Schmidt told Patch. "The owner of Dublin Cyclery, Chuck Tyler, was honored to be able to provide the boy a new bicycle."

Schmidt said the boy and his family were invited to the bicycle shop where he picked out a bike.

"Dublin Police Deputy Corvello purchased the boy a new helmet," Schmidt said.

Tyler, who has owned Dublin Cyclery since 1978, says they were happy to replace the boy's bike at no charge when officers asked for help getting the boy back on the road.

"We were very pleased to be involved and make a contribution to the community," Tyler said. "We wanted to be supportive of the family and to help him move forward with his life."
