City of Dublin Announces New Police Chief
Commander Dennis Houghtelling will replace Police Chief Tom McCarthy at the end of the month.

Dublin Police Services will soon have a new Chief, city officials announced yesterday.
Dublin officials released the following statement about the upcoming change of command at Dublin Police:
The City of Dublin has announced that Commander Dennis Houghtelling has been named the City’s new Police Chief, effective February 28. Commander Houghtelling, 61, replaces Police Chief Tom McCarthy, who will leave his post at the end of February to become Executive Director of the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority (EBRCSA).

Commander Houghtelling has nearly 40 years experience in law enforcement. He spent the first 27 years of his career with the Hayward Police Department, serving as a Deputy Police Chief for three of those years and as Interim Police Chief in 2003. Houghtelling joined the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office later that year and was promoted to Commander in 2010. His most recent assignment has been the management of the Department of Homeland Security’s Bay Area Urban Security Initiative where he assists with regional preparedness efforts.
“Commander Houghtelling’s experience and leadership of a municipal police department will serve the Dublin community well,” said City Manager Christopher Foss. “We are extremely pleased to welcome him to Dublin.”

“Becoming Dublin’s Police Chief and leading the men and women that keep the community safe is an incredible honor,” said Houghtelling. “I look forward to becoming part of this dynamic City and continuing the public safety excellence provided to Dublin residents and businesses.”
Since its incorporation in 1982, the City of Dublin has contracted with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to manage Dublin’s Police Services. Sheriff Gregory Ahern and Dublin City Manager Foss collaborate on the selection of the new Chief.
