1 Hurt In Hollywood Apartment Fire Caused By 'Careless' Smoking

Los Angeles Fire Department investigators believe a 3-story Hollywood apartment fire that injured one man was caused by careless smoking.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — A man was hospitalized in East Hollywood Wednesday after suffering smoke inhalation in a fire at a three-story apartment building.

The blaze, which happened shortly before 10 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Alexandria, "was caused by the careless discarding of smoking materials," said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The victim remains hospitalized in fair condition, added Humphrey. Crews were able to contain the fire to the apartment's living room area.

"Thanks to residential fire sprinklers in this 35,172 square-foot, 69 unit, 3-story center hallway building known as "The Alex" apartments, the first arriving 20 LAFD firefighters were able to fully extinguish the flames in just 12 minutes, limiting fire damage to one room," Humphrey said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
