The light bulb, continuously glowing, has served as a night light in the fire station since 1901. This year’s celebration will mark another benchmark for this light bulb, “A Million Hours of Service.” Included in the celebration will be the release of a NEW historical book about the bulb.
The light is never turned off and has a webcam so the light can be viewed on the Internet twenty-four hours a day. It is acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and numerous publications from around the world.

Over 2,000 community members and people from around the bay area are expected to attend the event. Money raised from shirts, books, and BBQ sales will benefit the Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 that supports, injured and fallen firefighters, the burn foundation and local charities in the Tri-Valley.
Editor’s Note:
What was thought to be the end of an era for the world-famous Centennial Bulb in 2013 was a false alarm when the bulb flickered back to life. The cause? Fire officials told Patch in a previous article the light appeared to be out when the uninterrupted power supply had failed. Once fire crews swapped the power source, the light was back on.
