2. Long Beach Sales Tax Rises To 11 Percent: What To Know (patch.com) — Long Beach shoppers are now paying an 11 percent sales tax after a new countywide Measure ER increase took effect, with another quarter-point city hike scheduled for 2027. While the added tax is already hitting local wallets, the revenue is being held in escrow during a legal challenge, and could eventually fund health and human services or be refunded depending on the court outcome.

3. Opposition grows as Long Beach moves to limit public comment (nbclosangeles.com) — Long Beach officials are weighing new rules that would move most public comment to a single 90‑minute period at the start of City Council meetings, prompting a petition and growing resident pushback. Supporters cite cost savings and convenience, while opponents argue it weakens residents' ability to speak on specific agenda items before votes, with a key council decision set for October 6.

4. Still in recovery, Long Beach braces itself for El Niño (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach has declared a local emergency as the Peninsula neighborhood, still reeling from Hurricane Marie's damage, braces for powerful El Niño-fueled winter storms. Crews are repairing the battered boardwalk and bulkhead, while residents stack sandbags and attend community meetings about flood preparedness. A major dredging project will soon add hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of sand to protect local homes and beaches.

5. Long Beach once again helps local entrepreneurs 'level up' their small businesses (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach has awarded $205,000 in grants to 25 local small businesses through its latest Level Up LB program, giving each participant $10,000 plus Chamber membership and marketing support. Officials say the initiative, funded in the 2026 budget, aims to strengthen neighborhood economies and help entrepreneurs grow sustainably.
