The Jewish holiday of Chanukah begins this year on Dec. 20th and lasts for eight days. The Festival of Lights recalls the victory, more than 2100 years ago, of a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over the mighty forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people in darkness.

The Menorah candelabra has since become a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression and of light over darkness.

In Orange County, many local synagogues will host Chanukah parties and celebrations.  The traditional latka or potato pancake made with oil will be served to remind of the miracle that made one day's supply of oil burn for eight days.

In Seal Beach, the story will come alive with the Menorah Lighting at the Pier produced by Chabad of Los Alamitos, a local Jewish organization serving the Jews of Los Al since 1986.

"The entire community is invited to join us on Dec. 18th at 4pm," says Rabbi Shmuel Marcus of Chabad. "The six-foot menorah will be kindled by local people and one of our Hebrew High students, and two lights will be lit in honor of the second night of Chanukah."

 The event will feature Jewish Klezmer legend Leo Chelyapov and his band. The Menorah event is dedicated to the memory of Moe Fox, a long time Seal Beach resident and friend of Chabad.

The Chanukah Menorah at Seal Beach will be held on Sunday., Dec. 18th at 4:00pm-6:00pm, at the Seal Beach Pier (Park near 8th Street). The event is free and open to the public. RSVP Call (714) 828-1851
