Hero Dog Saves Family From House Fire In Huntington Beach

A family dog's barking roused her sleeping family when their house caught fire overnight.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA —How do you thank a family pet for saving your life? One Huntington Beach household still has each other after their dog roused the sleeping house with barks of alert on the night their Elm Lane house caught fire in late November.

"We were asleep when we heard the dog barking," Richard Ireland told the media of the fire that began after midnight on Nov. 28. The pup woke in the night and spotted the blaze, as smoke was coming from the home's attached garage.

She started barking and running around, Ireland told reporters, waking the house. "Everyone got out OK," he said. The neighbors called 911 and reported that residents of the home were "running back inside to save pets" from the blaze.

Soon multiple engines from Huntington Beach, OCFA, Fountain Valley and Garden Grove Fire Departments arrived at the scene to do battle against the blaze, while large amount of smoke was still pumping from the structure.

"The Huntington Beach Fire Department forced entry into the garage," where the fire was centered, and extinguished the blaze at just after 2 a.m.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department urges residents to keep their doors closed in homes while you are sleeping.

"This can stop a fire from growing or spreading and can help keep smoke and heat out, your cherished items safe, and even save your life," they said. Just like a family dog.
