📰 News we're reading

• Water deal gets initial green light: 40% of Montecito's State Water rights pledged to North County housing (newspress.com) — Montecito Water District directors have unanimously backed a plan to sell more than 40% of the community's State Water Project rights to a huge North County housing development, in a deal worth about $40 million. Supporters say Montecito hasn't needed that water in years and will reinvest proceeds in desalination, groundwater banking, and recycling, while some residents worry about overreliance on desalinated supplies.

• Realtors meet with Insurance Commissioner Candidate (keyt.com) — State insurance commissioner candidate Ben Allen met with Montecito residents and local realtors in Santa Barbara to discuss wildfire and mudslide-related insurance problems. He contrasted his risk-reduction approach with opponent Jane Kim's single-payer disaster insurance proposal, stressing he wants fewer homeowners pushed into the California FAIR Plan and more incentives for mitigation in high-risk communities like Montecito.

• From Montecito Tragedy to Statewide Change (independent.com) — A new statewide wellness initiative for California law-enforcement officers grew directly from the trauma first responders faced during Montecito's 2018 debris flow. Former Santa Barbara County DA Joyce Dudley pushed for consistent mental-health and peer-support programs, and the POST Commission has now named the comprehensive Organizational Wellness Initiative in her honor to better prepare responders before crises strike.
