Fire Displaces Residents From 29 Apartments In Mtn. View

The blaze was on Escuela Avenue.

A two-alarm fire displaced residents from 29 apartment units at a complex in Mountain View on Thursday evening, a fire spokeswoman said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., crews responded to a report of structure fire in the 300 block of Escuela Avenue, just north of California Avenue, fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett said. Residents reported seeing flames in front of a unit at a back building, she said. Firefighters arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the second- and third-floor units at the complex, according to Garrett.

Fire crews and police officers arrived and checked to make sure all residents evacuated the complex, she said. Firefighters were able to control and extinguish the fire, according to Garrett. The residents waited at the Mountain View Senior Center until the firefighters completed their operations and determined who could go back to their units, Garrett said.

One resident was treated at the scene for minor injuries and another resident was taken to a hospital for minor injuries, she said. Some units sustained extensive damage and others had either smoke or water damage, according to Garrett.

The American Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents stay overnight at the senior center, the spokeswoman said.
