According to a California Highway Patrol report, the three-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 12 p.m. when a Mitsubishi sedan, traveling south on the two-lane road, sideswiped a northbound BMW SUV. The impact caused the Mitsubishi to continue southbound and crash into a Toyota sedan traveling behind the BMW, police said.

Brumley was taken to Adventist Health St. Helena, where he was initially arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug, police said.

Officers said the rear passenger in the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene, and the front passenger was later pronounced dead at Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

In the Toyota, which carried the driver and three passengers, one rear-seat passenger was later pronounced dead after being transported to Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center with major injuries, police said.

The driver and passenger of the BMW reported only minor pain injuries.
