Petaluma North SMART Station Groundbreaking Ceremony Announced

It is anticipated the new Petaluma North Station will have high ridership, as the existing Downtown Petaluma Station is SMART's busiest.

PETALUMA, CA — The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District and the city of Petaluma are hosting a groundbreaking ceremony next week for the Petaluma North Station.

Construction is expected to start this month on the long-awaited Petaluma North Station at Corona Road and North McDowell Boulevard. The SMART train station will have a parking lot with spots for cars, bicycles and electric-vehicle charging.

The project also includes the construction of a 3-mile segment of the SMART Pathway, which is part of the Great Redwood Trail. The pathway will provide a link between Downtown Petaluma and Main Street Penngrove, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian connectivity in the area.

With the Downtown Petaluma Station being SMART's busiest, it is anticipated the new Petaluma North Station will also have high ridership, serving as a vital transportation link.

Not only will it bring transportation benefits, 131 new affordable housing units will be built adjacent to the station.

Construction is by Stacy and Witbeck, Inc. and Ghilotti Brothers, Inc. in. a joint venture and is expected to be completed about a year from now, in late 2024.

Local leaders and elected officials expected to speak at the ceremony include: Eric Lucan, chair of SMART's Board of Directors; State Sen. Mike McGuire, California Senate majority leader; State Sen. Bill Dodd; State Assemblymember Damon Connolly; State Assemblymember/State Assembly Speaker pro-Tempore Cecilia Aguiar-Curry; Toks Omishakin, California Secretary of Transportation; Petaluma Mayor Kevin McDonnell; and Sonoma County Supervisor David Rabbitt, a member of the SMART Board of Directors.
