Speaking of heat, stoves and burners are firing up as local foodies take part in the ongoing Cancer Fighting Foods Cooking Demonstration, hosted by Loma Linda University Cancer Center.
Each month, cooking demonstrations are held at the kitchen of Nichol Hall on the University campus for people who want to learn from knowledgeable chefs and dietitians about how to prepare foods that help to reduce cancer risk, heart disease, inflammation, and more.

The cooking demonstrations are designed to make the cooking experience exciting and fun. Recipes are based on delicious and healthy plant-based foods. Perhaps the best part, taste tests are offered after the meals are prepared!

Get ready for the upcoming Healthy People 2011 Conference and Expo, set for March 8 to 9 at the Loma Linda University Drayson Center, with Loma Linda University Medical Center as the event’s presenting sponsor.
As the premier conference on lifestyle medicine and prevention of chronic disease, The Healthy People 2011 Conference and Expo will bring together experts and people from all walks of life to discuss ways to improve overall health and quality of life in our communities.
The 2011 conference, brought to you by the Loma Linda University School of Public Health, is dedicated to bringing food back into view, and how our health is linked with the daily food choices that we make. A number of pre-conference activities are also scheduled.

The Loma Linda University Transplantation Institute welcomes Dr. Michael de Vera as the new Institute Director.
Dr. de Vera is a multi-organ transplant surgeon with a focus on liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as hepatobiliary surgery. A native Californian, he completed his general surgery internship and residency at UC Davis East Bay and continued training at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. de Vera has been co-director of the liver transplant program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center since 2007 and director of the Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program since 2002.
He will join our staff of excellent transplant surgeons, which includes Drs. Pedro Baron, Arvand Elihu, Arputharaj Kore, and Hootan Roozrokh.
Prayers and condolences for the family and friends of Richard “Dick” Weismeyer, M.A., longtime executive director of university relations for Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center. Mr. Weismeyer died Jan. 12 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67.
Funeral services are scheduled as follows: Graveside service is at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton. Memorial service is at 10 a.m. Feb. 6 at Loma Linda University Church. The public is welcome to attend both services.
