SB County Candidates Face Lightning Round Questioning

More than 100 people attended the first forum for candidates in the race for the San Bernardino County’s third district. The event started with a brief introduction and a “lightning round” of yes or no questions asked by moderator Phill Naman to the participants: current county supervisor Neil Derry and his opponent former Twentynine Palms mayor James Bagley.

The following are the questions asked and the answers given.

Will you support impounding all cars for 30 days on all unlicensed drivers?

Derry: Yes

Bagley: Yes

Do you favor an illegal alien sanctuary law like Special Order 40 in Los Angeles?

Derry: No

Bagley: No

Are you familiar with Agenda 21 Planning goals and techniques?

Derry: Yes

Bagley: Yes

Do you favor the high-speed rail from Redlands to San Bernardino?

Derry: “There is no high speed rail from Redlands to San Bernardino. (It’s a continuation of the Metrolink system, he said.) I don’t have no problem with that … I support it.”

Bagley: No. “The Metrolink is a different issue, but if you’re talking about high speed rail it’s one of the most egregious fiscally irresponsible concepts.”

Do you favor the express bus (SBx) lane from Loma Linda to San Bernardino?

Derry: No

Bagley: No

Do you believe that San Bernardino needs an international airport?

Derry: No

Bagley: No

Would you vote for an unbalanced budget or only one that is balanced with new or higher taxes?

Derry: No

Bagley: No

Do you think San Bernardino County should be a “shall issue” concealed weapons permit county or a “may issue” concealed weapons permit county?

Derry: Shall issue

Bagley: Shall issue

Do you have any plans to fight the US Fish and Wildlife Service water over the Santa Ana Sucker (fish)?

Derry: Yes

Bagley: Yes

Do you favor a gang injunction law?

Derry: Yes

Bagley: Yes

Do you have a plan to fight government benefit fraud in the county?

Derry: Yes

Bagley: Yes

Do you know the flight path for San Bernardino International Airport?

Derry: Oh Yeah

Bagley: Yes

Does that happen to go right over the City of Redlands?

Derry: Yes

Does San Bernardino also need, since we need an international airport, do we need a deep-water harbor? (Tongue-in-cheek question)

Derry: If the private sector is going to pay for it, I’m all for it.

Bagley: No answer

Derry: Yes

Are current permitting for business as streamlined as they should be?

Derry: No!

Bagley: No!

Should green energy ventures receive county tax breaks?

Derry: I don’t have a problem with waving permit fees.

Bagley: No

Does the county pension fund need to be reworked?

Derry: Yes

Do you agree in raising the retirement age for county employees to lessen the drain on the pension fund?

Derry: Yes
