State Secretary: Hold Off Facility Closures Until After Election
Secretary of State Debra Bowen has asked the Postmaster General to delay closing several postal facilities until after the November election.

Secretary of State Debra Bowen has asked US Postmaster General Patrick Donahue to delay plans to close several postal service facilities until after November's election out of concern that it could affect voters who mail in ballots.
US Postal Service officials announced plans Thursday to close eight facilities in California sometime after May 15. Operations will be moved to other facilities, after a study showed that efforts could be streamlined. The San Bernardino Processing and Distribution Center in Redlands was one of the locations studied, but was spared.
Bowen was concerned that any delay in mail delivery could disenfranchise voters. We include Bowen's entire letter with this story.

Donahue has heard from officials at all levels of government. Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar and Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands) and Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona) also wrote in when it appeared the Redlands processing plant would be shuttered.
Their letters to the postmaster are also included.
