Blog: April Is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month
Now, is a great time to think about adopting a rescue pet or supporting the efforts of organizations who help rescue animals.

In the spirit of preventing animal cruelty, I would like to share the story of two little dogs who were abandoned and that I personally helped rescue last July. I hope their story helps them find forever homes, and I hope it encourages you to adopt a rescue pet and support those who rescue pets.
Last July, I heard about two Chihuahuas who had been discovered in the back yard of a foreclosed home in Rancho Palos Verdes by an appraiser. The owners had moved out and left them behind. I am not a dog rescuer by any means, but I could not bear to think of those dogs all alone in the heat. So I contacted my friend Suzanne, who owns Sunny Dog Place, to see if she could board them if I went and got them. She agreed, so I went to the home (after getting full consent from the realtor in writing) and picked up the dogs. The home was on Colt Road so naturally we named them Colt and Roadie.
The Chihuahuas are 3 years old, weigh 8 pounds and will do very well on their own—they need not be adopted together.

Colt is super cute. He is the one with a floppy ear and tons of personality! He would do very well with kids and other pets. He’s great on the leash and well behaved when we take him to adoption events.
Roadie is a sweetheart. He’s got the big ears and just wants to snuggle. He also walks great on the leash and is well behaved. I have brought Roadie home to my house on weekends, and he is potty trained and gets along with other dogs and people. He’s also very quiet, barking only a few times. I believe he would do well in a home with older kids (10+) and other pets.

The boys have been living at Sunny Dog Place for 10 months now (thank you, Suzanne—you're an angel!), and it’s time they found a home. I hope that if you have room in your lives you’ll consider adopting Colt or Roadie and sharing this info with your friends and families.
It's never OK to dump or abandon your pets. The people who disgarded Colt and Roadie should have taken them to the animal shelter rather than leave them in 90+ degree heat. We requested through their Realtor that they do the right thing by releasing them to us, and they refused.
Here are some local rescue organizations that do great work—I encourage you to support their efforts.
- Ace of Hearts
- Bill Foundation
- Bullies and Buddies
- Marley’s Pit Stop
- Noah’s Bark
- L.A. Harbor Animal Shelter
- Pedro Pet Pals (they provide services for shelters)
I have adopted dogs from both the Bill Foundation and Marley's Pit Stop. Feel free to share your rescue pets' story here in the comments!
