Citizen PAC Calls Out NoPowerPlant.com — “Truth Matters”

Measure A proponents caught misleading the public and misrepresenting facts.

REDONDO BEACH — Redondo Beach United, a citizen’s group representing the community’s “silent majority” by adamantly opposing Measure A, today broke its silence and called to attention NoPowerPlant.com’s deceptive tactics found on mailers and statements causing concern for the integrity of this crucial election. 

“We formed to encourage voters to make an "informed" decision at the polls- based on substance and supportive evidence. If Measure A is so "great" for this community, why the need to misrepresent and mislead voters?” Lisa Rodriguez, Chief Officer, Redondo Beach United for a No Vote on Measure A. Because truth matters, Redondo Beach United will no longer remain silent to NoPowerPlant.com and its supporter’s blatant disregard of facts at the expense of our community’s future. Redondo Beach voters deserve better.

Specifically, Redondo Beach United points to these major offenses by NoPowerPlant.com, which include:

1. Mailers implying endorsements by individuals—including Congressman Henry Waxman, Mayor Mike Gin, and Councilmen Aspel, Diels, and Kilroy—that do NOT endorse Measure A.
2. Claims in letters and websites that Measure A was qualified as a result of volunteer efforts—when in fact the initiative was qualified by paying  $13,475 to paid signature gatherers. (Form 460, No PowerPlant.com, July 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012)
3. Disparaging claims in letters to the editors, Feb. 7, 2013 by the leader of NoPowerPlant.com wrongfully accusing the citizen group Redondo Beach United, No on A, and Revitalize Redondo of being funded by AES. A quick fact check of FPPC#1354264 would have validated this for her. Fact: Fully funded by RB residents.
4. Boasts that their funding is from local residents, when its biggest donor is actually an out-of-city special interest group. (Form 460, No PowerPlant.com, July 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012)

In a letter responding to a NoPowerPlant.com mailer, Congressman Waxman wrote: “I explicitly told Council Member Brand that I was not endorsing the ballot proposal. I think it is unwise and will lead to a great deal of litigation …”

Waxman is not the only one who’s words and support have been misrepresented by NoPowerPlant.com:

“I did not give NoPowerPlant.com permission to use a quote from me to imply that I support Measure A,” said Councilman Steve Aspel. “It was taken out of context from a discussion about an unrelated issue.”

“It’s deceitful for them to imply that I support Measure A.  Unfortunately, it’s consistent with their overall tactics.” Steve Diels

“Measure A is bad for Redondo Beach, period,” said Councilman Matt Kilroy. “The quote used by NoPowerPlant.com was unrelated to this issue and misrepresents my position—I believe intentionally.”

Voters deserve the opportunity to weigh in on all the facts in determining their decisions and base their conclusions accordingly on March 5…introducing misinformation which seeks to compromises this ability is WRONG.
