Alas, the colossal cokers have come and gone. Last night, the final two made their way north to the El Segundo Chevron refinery. That was kind of exciting while it lasted! Anyway, there’s a lot of great stuff happening this weekend, so take your time reading this newsletter—I guarantee, there’s something for everyone!

I was just contacted by the owners of LA Craft Beer Tours and was informed they are suspending the South Bay Beer Shuttle for the time being. They hope to offer tours again in a month or two. You know I'll keep you in the loop!

Total Wine & More will hold a second Brown Bagging It – An Enlightening Blind Tasting event on Thursday, March 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This extremely fun and educational wine class gives guests the chance to blind taste a selection of paired wines, competing for the title of “favorite summer wine!” The tasting will offer a selection of eight wines that are generated from similar grapes but are grown around the world. Guests will battle their taste buds as they compare and experience a variety of wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir and one mystery grape which will be revealed on the day of the class. The cost is $25 per person and will be held at the Redondo Beach Total Wine & More superstore. Seating is limited and the last time they did this it sold out! Celebrate 25 years with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy! The PVPLC is offering a Guided Nature Walk to Eagle’s Nest on Saturday, March 9, from 9 to 11 a.m. Journey down Burma Road in the Portuguese Bend Reserve and take in the sweeping views from Eagle’s Nest that inspired Bill Ailor to found the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy in 1988. This moderate walk is free and open to the public. Parking is available along the street at the south end of Crenshaw Boulevard near Del Cerro Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. The Norris Center for the Performing Arts presents It’s Magic! on Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. It’s Magic! features an extraordinary lineup of award-winning magicians and masters of illusion who will conjure up an evening of spellbinding fun that is perfect for the entire family. The production is the longest-running magic revue in the country and the all-new 57th edition features six internationally acclaimed magicians and variety acts from some of the top showrooms in the world. Audience members will behold incredible full-stage illusions, deft sleight-of-hand tricks, awe-inspiring manipulations and some zany comedy. Tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for children. The 39th Annual Festival of the Kite takes place on Sunday, March 10, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Pier. Sponsored by the Redondo Pier Association, this is Southern California’s longest running kite festival. The event is free and open to the public and features live music by Tucker Booth and other entertainment. The festivities get underway with the 10th Annual Throw Down Yo-Yo Competition to be held on the Pier. Enjoy a free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu demonstration by the world famous Gracie Family and discover just how much you really can eat in five minutes during the eighth Annual Craig’s Hot Dog On A Stick Eating Contest at 3 p.m. There’s a $200 Prize! Prizes will be presented in several categories: Highest Flying Kite, Best Handmade Kite and Youngest Kite Flyer. An assortment of vendors will be on hand for all your kite flying needs. Soroptimist International of Manhattan Beach presents LUNAFEST, a traveling film festival, on Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. The festival spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny, and thought-provoking themes. The net proceeds are donated to charity, including the Breast Cancer Fund and Soroptimist programs, to advance the status of women in the community. Chez Mélange welcomes guest chef and author, Jack Witherspoon, into the kitchen on Sunday, March 10. Jack, a 12-year-old South Bay local, will be presenting a four course dinner of comfort recipes from his award-winning book, Twist it Up. The book shares Jack’s 60 favorite comfort food recipes, all of which he puts his own twist on. Recipes are kid tested—by Jack and his brother—and family approved. In December 2012, Jack was notified that his book had been awarded a top prize at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in France, in which 102 countries submitted over a thousand books for competition. Chef Robert Bell and co-owner Michael Franks of Chez Mélange have watched Jack grow up over the years, hone his cooking skills and develop his tastes. Copies of his book will be on sale, the proceeds of which go to Jack’s endowment and the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation. This just in: The Catalina Cooking Store is celebrating their one year anniversary this Sunday! They’ll have manufacturer reps in the store from several brands they carry doing demos, serving up recipes and answering questions. They’ll also have door prizes and discounts all day long.
