California artists energize a historic South Bay power plant

Back in the day, the South Bay of Los Angeles was home to an art scene as vibrant as that of Provincetown or Montmarte.

History repeated itself last night at the Opening Reception of the CA 101 2013 Art Exhibit at the historic AES Power Plant in Redondo Beach.

The juried art exhibition is sponsored by the Friends of Redondo Beach Arts, the Redondo Beach Art Group and AES Redondo Beach and will be displayed for two consecutive weekends – June 7 through June 9 and again on June 14 through June 16.

You don’t have to be an art aficionado to appreciate the unique backdrop – there were just as many people taking photographs of the building’s interior as the displays.

Speaking of the art, the varied works range from the astonishing to the sublime.

Artists from 35 cities throughout the state exhibited their creative impressions of life today in California in a variety of mediums including, sculpture, paintings, glass work, textiles and photography.

Hours for the show are as follows:

Friday, June 7 – 5 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, June 8 – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday, June 9 – 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday, June 14 – 5 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, June 15 – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday, June 16 – 1 to 7 p.m.

Art doesn’t get any more accessible than this.
