Doctors Amputate Man's Arm Caught In Torrance Printing Press

Paramedics were unable to cut the machine apart because the printing press ink was flammable.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – A 46-year-old man's arm became caught in a printing press at a Torrance plastic manufacturing company and doctors were forced to amputate, authorities told Daily Breeze Tuesday. Paramedics went to the National Plastics Inc. at 16809 Gramercy Place about 11:50 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Although Paramedics would normally use tools to cut the machine apart when they found they were unable to dislodge the man's arm, they couldn't because the ink was flammable, Torrance fire Assistant Chief Steve Treskes told Daily Breeze.

A County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center emergency team responded to the scene and performed a field amputation after determining the arm couldn't be saved. The man lost his arm below the elbow, Daily Breeze reported.
