Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide

Tomorrow is the Summer Solstice, the first official day of summer and the longest day of the year. There are plenty of fabulous outdoor events happening this weekend, so get outside and take advantage of all that extra daylight!

Manhattan Beach luxury boutique, Shade Hotel, hosts a monthly Wine Academy on the third Thursday of each month, that’s tonight Thursday, June 20. Wine loving friends can gather to socialize, taste and learn from experts about new wines in a relaxed, fun, atmosphere and Shade’s rooftop SkyDeck classroom offers stellar sunset views of the South Bay. This popular event is open to the public and runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and offers wine lovers an opportunity to enjoy an intimate, casual, wine-centric social gathering. Well-priced at $25 per person in advance, $35 at the door, the Wine Academy features expert, interactive presentations of exceptional wines, boutique and/or limited production wines, along with tantalizing wine-paired hors d’oeuvres prepared by Executive Chef Chris Garasic. This Wine Academy features The Prisoner and Saldo Winery.  It’s a great opportunity to expand your wine knowledge! For more information or to make reservations, call 310-546-4995 or visit the website at www.shadehotel. Shade Hotel is located at 1221 North Valley Drive in Manhattan Beach.

The South Bay will host the inaugural Wounded Heroes Bike Ride on Sunday, June 23. Steve Diels and the South Bay Bicycling Coalition are supporting the Wounded Heroes of America organization by offering an informal bike ride for Veterans and their supporters. Show your appreciation to Veterans, ride with the real heroes, have some fun and enjoy some great food afterward. The event starts at Veteran’s Park and riders are requested to be there by 8 a.m. The ride begins at 9 a.m. and will go to the Manhattan Beach Pier and back. Enjoy lunch at the Elks Lodge after the ride. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. All bicyclists must wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road. The route will utilize the Strand bike path and the out and back mileage will be fully adjustable based on the rider’s capabilities but in all cases, it will be a casual/social pace. Steve Collins of Hermosa Cyclery will provide bikes to Veterans that do not have a bike and make them available the morning of the ride. Bottled water and gift bags will be provided to all participants. For more information, visit the website at http://woundedheroesofamerica.org/. Veteran’s Park is located at 309 The Esplanade and the Elks Lodge is located at 315 The Esplanade in Redondo Beach.
