Summer is about to burst in the South Bay with the second summer concert series kicking off in El Segundo this weekend. Yeah, there’s always plenty of fun, engaging activities going on around town but there is one particular event happening this weekend that you shouldn’t miss. If you didn’t get to it last weekend, you must check out the CA 101 Art Exhibit at the AES Plant. This is the final weekend of the show and trust me, it’s fabulous! Promise me (and pinky swear!) you’ll make time for it.
Craft beers have taken center stage these days and IPAs are all the rage. Lovers of hoppy, craft beers are always on the hunt for new brews and Total Wine & More has just the thing – a new Hooray for IPA! Beer Class on Thursday, June 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hops lovers and thrill seekers should prepare their taste buds for an India Pale Ale (IPA) style excursion. Guests will delight in tasting a variety of IPA styles including: English IPA, Belgian IPA, American IPA, American Double/Imperial IPA and other hoppy goodness. The second annual CA 101 2013 Art Exhibit is a juried art exhibition being presented by Friends of Redondo Beach Arts, Redondo Beach Art Group and AES Redondo Beach. Artists from the Oregon border to the Mexican border will exhibit their creative impressions of life today in California in a variety of mediums including, sculpture, paintings, glasswork and photography. The event features a number of artists from right here in the South Bay. This is the FINAL weekend for the exhibit - June 14 through June 16 - at the historic AES Power Plant in Redondo Beach. If you haven’t already bought tickets for the 19th Annual Manhattan Wine Auction on Saturday, June 15 you’ll have to wait until next year because it’s already sold out. The Manhattan Wine Auction is the largest charity wine auction in Southern California. Hosted by the Manhattan Country Club, the event sells out every year with 1,400 paid attendees. This one is news to me….South Bay Galleria will host the internationally acclaimed family dance party event, Baby Loves Disco, on Saturday, June 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Food Court. For the past 8 years, Baby Loves Disco has been transforming the hippest night clubs across the world into child-proof discos as toddlers, preschoolers and parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit, let loose for some post naptime, pre-dinner fun. Make no mistake, this is NOT the Mickey Mouse Club and Barney is banned. Baby Loves Disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real DJs blending classic disco tunes From the 70s & 80s with today’s hottest dance tunes and it’s guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving. It’s summertime in the South Bay and you know what that means – free, outdoor concerts! The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on selected Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. This Sunday, June 16 features Bella Donna, a tribute to Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. Local food vendors will be on hand and kids can stop by the gazebo for free face painting and arts & crafts provided by Camp Cowabungo Day Camp. Rock & Brews introduces Pint Night every Wednesday evening at the flagship location in El Segundo. The weekly event will engage and educate beer lovers on new and popular craft and artisanal beers and will showcase a notable master brewer or brewery representative for informal tastings and beer-chat with guests. Pint Night festivities are open to the public and begin promptly at 6 p.m. There is no admission fee and participants who purchase the spotlighted brew will receive a commemorative glass from the brewery. We have a sad bit of news to share. Lou Schreiber, head instructor and founder of Walk In Dance Out, passed away this week. During his career, Lou taught thousands of people the fine art of ballroom dancing throughout the South Bay and beyond. His skill and patience has made the dance floor a more graceful place. Details for his service have not yet been released.
