Coroner IDs Peninsula Man Killed While Riding Bike On Highway 1

The man accused of hitting him allegedly left the scene with the bicycle still lodged under his vehicle, the CHP said.

HALF MOON BAY, CA – A man who was killed by an alleged hit-and-run driver near Half Moon Bay has been publicly identified by the coroner's office. Forty-four-year-old Edward Hugh Wade was found dead on the shoulder of Highway 1, near Furtado Lane, according to the CHP and coroner's officials.

Wade, a resident of Half Moon Bay, was fatally struck by a Ford SUV around 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The man suspected of hitting him – Angel Gabriel Gongora, 29, of Half Moon Bay – is accused of fleeing the scene with Wade's bike still lodged under his vehicle.

"It appears the bicyclist was riding northbound on SR-1, approaching Furtado Lane when the driver of the Ford failed to see the bicyclist ahead of him and collided with the bicycle," CHP Officer Art Montiel said. "The bicyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire department paramedics."
