Callinan Sports & Fitness Center Asphalt Replacements

Public Works staff perform 2 major asphalt replacements at Callinan Sports & Fitness Center

This week, Public Works staff completed two major asphalt replacement projects at the Callinan Sports & Fitness Center.  These sections of failed asphalt were located near and around two storm drain drop inlets.  The failed sections of asphalt were replaced using a “dig-out” and replacement method (discussed at the June 12 City Council meeting).  This pavement replacement approach offers several benefits:

  • Pavement should last for several years
  • Saves ongoing maintenance costs related to ongoing “pothole” repairs
  • Improves parking lot drainage

This project aims to save time and money by reducing the amount of “pothole repairs,” which consists of filling potholes with cold patch material during the rainy season, and a hot mix whenever possible. Badly damaged sections of street are cut out, removed, and repaved to prevent further deterioration. To fill cracks in pavement, an asphaltic sealant is used to reduce the destruction of street surface caused by water seeping into the base material beneath the asphalt. The Streets Division works together with the Water Services Division of Public Works to pave over water leak repair excavation sites, following the completion of underground repairs to the water system.
