Fear of Confrontation:
One of the problems with people verbally or physically defending themselves is a fear of getting physically or emotionally hurt in the confrontation. Many people are so scared about being confrontational [I prefer the word “assertive” rather than confrontational] that they will do almost anything to avoid it. They will let a person break an agreement, they will not ask for better terms in a business dealing, they will not confront an abusive spouse or co-worker for fear of escalation. If this non-assertive person is assaulted they will do whatever the aggressor wants, thinking that by doing so they won't get hurt. They will even go with this person to a new location knowing full well that this is a grave mistake.

Being assertive is a necessary part of life. It is a skill that must be learned in order to get the things that you deserve. If you don't get the things that you deserve or need you will be forced to live a life of settling for less than what is rightfully yours. Your joy in life will be greatly diminished. You will live with uncertainty, thinking there is little you can or will do to stand-up for what you believe to be fair and just. You will essentially be out of control with your life and lost in your pursuit of happiness. What’s worse, you might allow someone else the choice in a self-defense encounter of what will happen to your body and your life.
If you have low self-esteem you might feel that everyone is better and smarter than you and that they have a right to get what they want at your expense. Learning to stand-up for yourself and be assertive can be a complicated journey. Martial arts can help by playing a huge role in the development of a positive self-image and elevated self-esteem; both of which are essential in becoming assertive. The confidence gained through martial art training empowers people with the courage to ask for what they feel they deserve and the ability to speak out assertively when they are treated unjustly.
