San Diego Firefighter Injured In Las Vegas Shooting

As many as two dozen off-duty police officers and firefighters were in the crowd at the country music festival in Las Vegas.

SAN DIEGO, CA – An off-duty San Diego firefighter was injured in Sunday's mass shooting in Las Vegas.

The firefighter was one of seven San Diego firefighters in Las Vegas, according to department spokeswoman Monica Munoz. It is not known how many were in attendance at the country music festival on the Las Vegas strip, where a gunman opened fire, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern Unites States history.

The firefighter suffered a minor injury during the massacre at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival, Munoz said. She did not provide further details.

"They were not on duty when this happened, so it's private," she said. "I got permission from the injured (firefighter) to release that much."

As many as two dozen off-duty police officers and firefighters from San Diego were at the outdoor show when the gunman, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, began shooting from the 32nd floor of nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, unleashing a fusillade of gunfire that lasted 10 to 15 minutes.

In a predawn tweet, SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman stated that she was grateful the members of her agency present during the mass shooting were unharmed.

"We are all grieving with (the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) and everyone affected by this horrific attack," Zimmerman added.

Likewise, San Diego Fire Chief Brian Fennessy stated that his agency "sends our condolences and prayers to all those affected by this horrific and tragic shooting."

A spokeswoman from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said no deputies from the agency were believed to have been in attendance at the festival.

One Las Vegas-area officer responding to the shooting was critically injured while another sustained minor injuries, police said. Two off-duty officers from the Las Vegas area reportedly were killed.

The gunman apparently killed himself before SWAT officers stormed the hotel room where he'd been staying for several days, according to police.

Authorities disclosed no suspected motive for the massacre.

The mass shooting in Las Vegas follows events in both the U.S. and abroad where attackers have targeted concerts and entertainment venues. In May, 22 people were killed in a suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in the United Kingdom. In June 2016, 49 people were killed and the attacker was shot dead at Pulse Nightclub, a gay club in Orlando where patrons were attending Latino Night. The previous year, terrorists attacked The Bataclan in Paris during a rock concert, killing more than 100 people.

California Gov. Jerry Brown released a statement Monday and said Capitol flags would be flown at half-staff in recognition of the victims and their families.

"Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those killed and injured in last night's tragic and senseless shooting and we stand with the people of Nevada in this difficult time," Brown said.

Jason Aldean, the country singer who was on stage for the last act of the festival when the shooting occurred, is scheduled to play a concert Saturday at the Mattress Firm Amphitheatre in Chula Vista. Aldean also has a Friday concert scheduled at the Forum in Los Angeles County and Sunday at Honda Center in Orange County.

It was still unclear if Aldean plans to go through with those concerts in light of the Las Vegas shooting.

Aldean called Sunday night's shooting "beyond horrific."

"I still don't know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that me and my crew are safe," Aldean wrote on his Instagram page after the shooting. "My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night."
