AlmaVia of San Francisco Residents Find a New Beat

Music Therapy Programs at AlmaVia of San Francisco Encourage Self-Expression and Promote Well-Being

A group of AlmaVia of San Francisco residents is learning to live life to a whole new beat. Once a week, they grab rattles and percussion instruments to create rhythm that’s adding some groove to their souls.

Illona Root-Chang, AlmaVia of San Francisco’s life enrichment director, is the woman behind this unique music therapy program. She’s seen the benefits music has for seniors and decided to team up with local music therapist Scott Garred to provide this class to residents, adding to the abundance of activities already offered, including a drum circle class.

The class is designed to encourage self-expression, facilitate communication and promote well-being. Scientists have found that playing an instrument improves the memory, hearing and self-esteem of seniors.

Every week, Scott directs the residents in a one-hour music session. On average, 20 to 30 residents participate. Before beginning, the residents are encouraged to grab an instrument of their choosing from xylophones, tambourines or shakers to sing songs ranging from Broadway hits to country favorites. Even family members have been known to stop by and enjoy playing music. No prior experience is needed.
