SF Road Rage Shooting Leads To Federal Charges

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Federal prosecutors have charged an Oakland man in connection with a violent road rage incident that happened last week in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood in which he allegedly shot at another vehicle.

Wilmer Arteaga, 29, has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and for possessing more than 40 grams of fentanyl for sale, according to prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Arteaga made his initial court appearance on Friday in San Francisco to face the charges.
According to prosecutors, on Dec. 27, Arteaga was driving a white two-door BMW sedan when his car and another vehicle stopped on Turk Street at Van Ness Avenue. Officers nearby witnessed one car shift into reverse and back up into the BMW.

That is when Arteaga got out of the BMW and shot at the other vehicle. Both cars then sped off, prosecutors alleged.

About 15 minutes later, officers spotted the BMW parked blocks away and arrested Arteaga there. After detaining him, officers located a loaded pistol and fentanyl in his possession, according to prosecutors.
If convicted on both charges, Arteaga could face a maximum of 10 years in prison for the firearm offense as well as 40 years for the possession with intent to distribute fentanyl charge, prosecutors said.

Arteaga remains in custody.
